Dubai Duty Free achieved annual sales close to US$ 712 million in 2007 placing the operation the third largest in the world in terms of turnover.
As a result of its growth and development, Dubai Duty Free currently employs over 1,800 staff representing 37 nationalities and speaking 33 different languages.
To date, Dubai Duty Free has received more than 130 awards from industry, media and government bodies which bear testimony to the operation’s retail success. A recipient of the Business Traveler award for ‘Best Airport in Duty Free Shopping Worldwide,’ for a staggering sixth consecutive year, the operation also attained its ‘Superbrand’ status from the Superbrands Council.
The operation is highly committed to promoting Dubai through a series of high level sporting events such as The Dubai Tennis Championships which is owned and organized by Dubai Duty Free and comprises a WTA Tier ll tournament played back-to-back with an ATP World Series Gold tournament. The Dubai Tennis Championships received the ATP Excellence Award for ‘Tournament of the Year 2007’ –by the ATP Tour.
Other sports benefiting from the operation’s sponsorship and support include major golf tournaments, including the industry-focused Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup, horse racing, international powerboat racing, Rugby and Basketball.
Dubai Duty Free also runs innovative and successful promotions: the world famous Finest Surprise Luxury Car draw had given away more than 1,300 cars to travelers since it was launched in 1989 and the Millennium Millionaire draw have created 72 millionaires since its launched in 1999. Dubai Duty Free is not just about generating profits. The organization has set up its own Dubai Duty Free Foundation in 2004 to help needy children and has resulted in an even wider range of charities for the tsunami-stricken village in Sri Lanka. The operation is also a major sponsor of Standard Chartered Bank’s ‘Seeing is Believing’ which aims to restore sight to more than one million people. A supporter of the Arts, Dubai Duty Free is a founding Patron of the Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre (DUCTAC), a non-profit centre initiated by theatre and art lovers in Dubai.
Looking towards the future, Dubai Duty Free will design, build and operate a shopping area covering over 8,000 square metres, scheduled to open early next year. ‘All the space is now assigned, all the merchandising and categories in each area are already allocated,’ notes Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free.
